 FASHION TRENDS 

The men wore wraps around skirts known as the shendyt, belted at the lower waist and the frontal assembled and pleated whilst the women frequently wore kalasiris, which are sheath dresses and were more conservative than the male garments.

16th CENTURY FASHION

These fashions: Spanish capes, corsets and farthingales, are all from the 16th century, where they became very popular in Europe. The farthingale is a bell-shaped hoop skirt and was widely used during the Renaissance period, where it took hours for women to get dressed.

MODERN DAY FASHION

Nowadays, traditional Spanish clothing is still worn, however it is only worn at special events and celebrations. Flamenco dancers still wear the classic Spanish dress, normally in the colour red, and in response the men wear black tuxedos and slacks.

 TRAJE DE LUCES 

Traditional bullfighting costumes have stayed the same throughout the years, maintaining their elegant and flamboyant costumes, These bullfighting costumes have also been referred to “traje de luces” meaning “suits of lights” and are distinguished by the sequins, silver and gold thread, and intricate embroidery.

 HEAD ACCESSORIES 

PEINETA

The peineta is the large decorative comb that holds the mantila in place. It is used on special occasions, and was introduced centuries ago which made it a traditional component of Spanish clothing.

MANTILLA

The mantilla is a Spanish veil that is worn during religious events such as weddings. It is a lace or silk scarf that is adorned on the head held by a high comb and held in place by pins.

 GILET 

Gilet is a sleeveless jacket and is an integral part of traditional Spanish clothing. In the 19th century, they would be fitted and embroidered; and it was shaped like a man’s waistcoat. There are also contemporary gilets that are used for added warmth outdoors.
