 CLOTHING

COLOUR PATTERNS

First off, let’s start with this very informative guide to Japanese colors. It shows the color of social statuses, colors to wear on a particular month or season and how many Japanese colours are there.

WOMEN

KIMONO

Kimonos are traditional Japanese dresses made out of silk that are used on special occasions such as weddings, formal traditional events and weddings. As mentioned before, the guide to Japanese colors shows the color of the kimono to be worn on a particular month, this is because it has been an aesthetic to Japan as it is very pleasing to the eyes. Additionally, they are to be worn depending on the person’s age, marital and social status.

Yukatas are the ‘lowkey’ if I must say, types of kimono. In other words, a casual kimono. Yukata was traditionally intended to be a clothing  worn after taking a bath in hot springs or onsens However as time passed, they used these yukatas for summer festivals and increasing numbers of yukatas with appealing designs grew, almost making them impossible to differ with a kimono. The materials such as the cotton or synthetic fibre used to make a yukata is efficient for absorbing the remaining moisture after taking a bath.

MEN

KIMONO

Male kimonos are usually plain and in matte color which makes it less appealing than a female’s kimono in regards to design and color. They are also used the same way as the female’s kimono.

YUKATA

Male yukata has a similar use as the female ones except they are less designed and more on matte colors.
